First time on Youku?

1. Use youku.tv, or the app listed as YOUKU — Drama, Film, Show, Anime. That is the international product, operated out of Hong Kong; the mainland youku.com is a different service with a different catalogue.
2. Register with an email address, a phone number, or a Facebook, Google or Apple sign-in. Whether the phone field accepts a non-Chinese number is not documented anywhere — if it refuses yours, use email or one of the third-party logins instead.
3. Set the interface language from the switcher on youku.tv, which lists English among its options. Subtitles and dubbed audio toggle inside the player.
4. VIP takes Google Pay or Apple Pay, so an overseas card works. The catch is in Youku’s own terms: VIP is tied to the country you signed up in, and logging in from another country can make part or all of it stop working. If you move, expect to deal with that.
5. If the player says “The video is temporarily unavailable” with error code 0597-32555, try a different browser before deciding the show isn’t available to you. When we checked in September 2026, the same free episode failed in an up-to-date Chrome, even in a private window with extensions off, and played in Safari.

First time on Netflix?

1. Search the English title first, then the Chinese one. Netflix often lists a Chinese drama under a title nobody else uses.
2. Netflix licenses Chinese dramas country by country, and its Chinese catalogue differs more between regions than most of its library. A title a friend abroad is watching may simply not exist in your account.
3. Where Netflix does carry a currently-airing drama, it usually runs behind the Chinese platforms rather than alongside them. If you are keeping up week to week, that is the trade-off you are making for professional subtitles.
